YUKI KOKUBO

Biography

Raised in an artists’ community in rural Japan, Yuki and her parents moved to New York City in 1986. She began photographing as a teenager and attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she obtained a BFA in 2000, with a concentration in photography.

In recent years, Yuki has focused on social and environmental issues and has photographed for nonprofits in Chicago, New York and India. In 2010, she extensively documented the BP oil spill and coastal restoration project for the Environmental Defense Fund. In fall of 2010, Yuki began to pursue an MFA in Social Documentary Film at the School of Visual Arts. She has decided to take a year off for personal reasons but hopes to return to finish her degree in the near future.

Yuki spent a part of her summer with EP Films, down in the jungles of the Yucatan jungle, where she spent three weeks documenting a jaguar and puma-collaring project in El Eden Ecological Reserve. Yuki has worked as an Associate Producer with Common Good Productions, where she worked on Al Gore's Climate Reality Project as well as a multi-media project for the National Fish & Wildlife.

Yuki is passionate about the underwater world and recently shot her first underwater video in Bonaire. A certified Advanced Diver, Yuki is also proficient in Japanese. As of winter 2011/12, Yuki is working on a personal film in Japan.
