Glaciers
Glaciers exist in locations where snowfall accumulation matches evaporation and seasonal melt, but due to global warming, many of the world’s glaciers are losing their equilibrium and retreating at alarming rates.
Sea level rise due to glacial melt could have devastating consequences for coastal cities. Scientific research predicts a sea level rise of three feet by the end of the century, which could make wave surges from storms more devastating.
Glacial ice is the largest source of freshwater in the world. The implications of the loss of glaciers are serious, as seasonal melt water from glaciers provides life support for billions of people, as well as animals and plants.
